Sometimes a tooth needs to be extracted that isn’t a wisdom tooth. Aside from wisdom teeth extractions, the most common reasons for needing a tooth extracted are:

  • The tooth is badly decayed and cannot be restored with a filling or a crown.
  • The tooth is broken or fractured in a way that cannot be restored.
  • There is an active infection affecting the tooth root.
  • Periodontal disease has destroyed the supporting bone around a tooth.

What happens if I don’t have an infected tooth removed?

Teeth that need extractions because of decay or trauma pose a health risk if left in the mouth. Decay can spread to neighboring teeth. Periodontal disease can progress, further destroying the jawbone. Cracks and fractures are entry points for bacteria, which will cause further decay and disease.

Damaged or decayed teeth should be removed to protect the surrounding teeth and bone. When these teeth are removed, it’s recommended that the space be filled with either a dental bridge or a dental implant. Dr. Ali will discuss what the best option is for you and your mouth.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed, but for those who do, Patterson Village Dentistry offers comfortable wisdom teeth extractions. Extraction Process

Wisdom teeth removal is usually approximately an hour long procedure and you’ll go home shortly after it’s done. Most patients choose to be sedated, which makes the time seem like it’s gone by even faster. The doctor will first numb the extraction sites. Next, an incision is made in the gum tissue to access the tooth. The tooth is often cut into sections, making removal easier. Once the tooth is out, the surgical site is closed and you begin healing. Swelling of the cheeks usually increases for the first two to three days, then subsides. The doctor will prescribe appropriate pain medication to help manage soreness.

Preventing and Treating Dry Socket

Wisdom teeth are also called third molars. They typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 21, although they can come in earlier or later than that. Most people do have wisdom teeth, but not everyone! It’s not uncommon to have zero to four wisdom teeth and sometimes people have more than four!

Some patients have their wisdom teeth erupt with no issue and there’s no need to have them extracted. Many patients, however, simply don’t have enough room in their jaw for the wisdom teeth to come in properly. In cases where the wisdom teeth are impacted, or they’ve erupted in a way that makes them difficult to keep clean and healthy, it’s usually recommended they be removed. Removing wisdom teeth can help prevent problems such as crowding, crooked teeth, and gum disease.

While not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth extracted, if your dentist has recommended you do have them out, then leaving them in can cause problems down the road. Even if they don’t bother you, wisdom teeth that are impacted can push against the neighboring teeth in your mouth, moving them out of alignment. If you’ve already gone through orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth, you’ll want to avoid the crowding caused by pressure from third molars. The other common problem that arises from wisdom teeth remaining in the mouth is gum disease. When wisdom teeth erupt, but are in a position that’s difficult to keep clean, gum disease can become active in these areas. Gum disease, left untreated, has a cascade effect on your overall health and should be taken seriously.
