Emergency Treatment

Some dental needs are not urgent, but others require you to seek treatment right away. But how do you know if what you’re experiencing is considered a dental emergency? Here are a few examples of when you should see the dentist as soon as possible:
Severe pain anywhere in the mouth.

  • Swollen gums, appearance of a “pimple” on the gums.
  • Severe pain following an extraction.
  • A tooth that “throbs”.
  • Broken or cracked tooth that hurts.
  • Knocked out tooth.
  • Denture that’s rubbing the gum tissue raw.

Other urgent dental needs that shouldn’t be delayed but don’t necessarily require an emergency weekend visit include fixing large cavities, root canal therapy, and treating gum disease.

Painful cracked and broken teeth can happen at any time.

Loose or knocked-out teeth

A knocked-out tooth is definitely a dental emergency that needs to be treated immediately to have the best chance of saving the tooth. If the entire tooth has been knocked out, put it in a container with milk and get to your dentist within the hour. If the tooth came out but didn’t touch anything outside your mouth, you may carefully place it back into its socket and immediately get to the dentist. There’s no guarantee that the tooth can be saved, but in some cases it’s possible if treated immediately.

*** Misplaced teeth and lost teeth are time dependent.

What’s the solution for a broken or cracked tooth?

The treatment for a broken or cracked tooth depends on the severity of the damage. A small chip is not an emergency and can be repaired with tooth-colored bonding material. For larger chips or broken teeth, as long as the root is intact and enough tooth is remaining, a crown might be the best option to restore the health and function to the tooth. If the tooth is deeply cracked or fractured, sometimes it must be extracted and replaced with a dental implant. An exam and x-ray of the area will help the dentist determine the best option for restoring your tooth.

What to do when you have a toothache

It’s OK to take whatever over the counter pain reliever is safe for you to help relieve the discomfort of a toothache. In the meantime, you should call your dentist to schedule an appointment so you can be seen as soon as possible. An exam and x-ray will be needed to properly diagnose the reason for your toothache. Treatment can begin immediately to relieve your pain once you’re in the office.

Dental Abscess

An abscessed tooth is caused by an infection that usually forms at the tip of the tooth’s root. The most common symptom of a tooth abscess is a swelling that looks like a pimple on the gum tissue. It can often feel painful, but not always. You might notice pain or discomfort that comes and goes, or you might have persistent throbbing pain on the affected tooth. This is a bacterial infection that needs to be treated. The most common treatment for a dental abscess is root canal therapy. Your dentist might also prescribe antibiotics depending on the severity of the infection.

Lost Crown or Filling

Occasionally it happens that a crown comes off, or a filling falls out. In these cases, you’ll want to make an appointment to come in and have it repaired soon. It’s not ideal to have the tooth exposed where the crown or filling used to protect. If it’s exposed for too long, new decay can start. If a crown falls off, keep the crown and bring it in with you. In many cases, the crown can be re-cemented onto the tooth. If a filling falls out, it can’t go back in, so you don’t need to keep it. If possible, a new filling will be placed where the old one fell out. In some cases, a filling comes out along with part of the tooth or because there was decay forming around the filling. In these cases, the tooth might now need a crown. Your dentist will assess the tooth and recommend the best treatment to restore the tooth.
